UCI Cycling World Championships - Medical and First Aid Cover
Some of the Avium Team were down at Glentress at the start of August as part of the medical cover for the UCI Cycling World Championships Marathon and Cross-Country events.
During the marathon event, we provided 7 personnel, specialist medical and evacuation equipment including two ATVs (all-terrain vehicles) capable of stretcher evacuations.
During the following 6 days of Cross-Country events, we were part of a larger medical team with our remit focussing on treating and evacuating injured competitors on course, within the ‘field of play’.
Throughout this time, we completed a number of medical interventions including spinal immobilisations and treatment of unconscious casualties. These casualties were evacuated on our specialist equipment before handing over to onsite doctors and ambulance service.
Saturday’s Illuminator Trail race brought our 2019 Event Medical Cover Season to a close. The Illuminator is a great event and this year saw the first time that three different routes were possible. We had our event medical tent where all three routes converged and also had two team members and ATV out on course and two at the start/finish hub.
We had a great couple of days on our 2 day Outdoor First Aid Course this week at Cairngorm Mountain.
Fantastic venue to train with easy access onto the hill.

We have just finished another Banchory Beast Race where we were providing medical and first aid cover for the event.
We had 9 team members who were located at different points in the course and a tent based at the start/finish line.
We had the Polaris ATV for some areas with challenging access, along with our Volkswagen 4motion transporter for evacuation.
